Rustic Gardening Ideas

One of the biggest trends in gardening is without a doubt the use of native and adapted plants in the yard. This trend is a great turn in landscape gardening -- not only do natives use less water and require less care, their look and feel is positively stunning for home owners seeking a rustic feel.

One of our favorite plants is the Texas Sage, or Cenizo. This plant is especially adapted to survive in arid regions, but will grow in wetter areas so long that has good drainage and plenty of sun. This silver or green shrub will tolerate any drought, and blooms beautiful blue flowers after summer rains. This plant is a great rustic alternative to the over-used boxwood hedge; its silver and rough branches are positively rustic country. Consider putting a wrought iron bench in front of a backdrop of these plants. The black iron will be stunning against the silver foliage.

Another great plant for the rustic garden is the Texas Mountatin Laurel tree. This tree is slow growing (about a foot per year) but worth the time. It likes to have multiple trunks. The deep green foliage is evergreen. The trunk likes to twist and looks great. In the early spring the tree will flower a purple bloom, which is a heavenly grape-like scent. If you only have standard shrubs, consider this is a great little tree (up to 15 feet tall) -- it will give your home some country feeling.

Our final suggestion to get you started in your rustic gardening adventure is a plant called artemesia.

This low-growing plant smells of licorice, has silver lacy foliage, and is a wonderful drought-tolerant ground cover. It does need full to mostly full sun, even in the blistering Texas heat!
